Homecoming at Lake Cadillac

Meet Shannon & Derrick

“Hello! We are Derrick and Shannon Larr and we’d love to get to know you. We are a husband and wife team serving all of northern Michigan and are based out of Cadillac.” -Derrick & Shannon

Derrick has been an “up north” kid his entire life. He was born in Cadillac, and still lives only a block away from that very hospital.  Shannon moved with her family to Cadillac as she began high school and has remained ever since.

Fate brought them together over a decade ago when they both were working in Cadillac. They came into each other’s lives at difficult times. Their friendship grew strong, and eventually turned into a love for one another that remains strong today. They’ve been married for over ten years now, and share their love with 3 wonderful children, Austin, Connor, and Clarabelle.  Cadillac is their home and they are proud of their community, its members, and the beautiful surroundings each season brings. They are excited to be able to capture the moments of the area, its people, and businesses.

Derrick is an award winning photojournalist. He was Chief Photojournalist at 9&10 News for many years. He has turned that passion into teaching young adults Digital Production at the Wexford-Missaukee Career Tech Center. All while shooting photos and capturing video for his true passion, Wooden Nickel.

Shannon has always had an eye for the arts. When she is behind the camera she uses a traditional and artistic approach. She is incredible at listening to her clients ideas and making sure there vision comes

Derrick and Shannon know that life can be expensive so they want to capture your memories at an affordable price. You will receive top notch photography and videos for a reasonable price. At Wooden Nickel, our style reflects you. We get to know our clients to help share their story. What makes you tick, what makes you smile, what makes you sad. We work with each individual to bring out their authenticity and make it shine!

Why the Name Wooden Nickel?

“Growing up I was very close to my grandpa. He taught me to dream big and work hard and good things would happen. Every time I would leave his house he would tell me before I left, “Don’t take any wooden nickels.” I was never really sure what it meant, but it always stuck with me. When he passed away a few years ago the Wooden Nickel was always something to remind me to dream big, and work hard. A photography and videography business of our own was our dream. To always remember to keep dreaming big, keep working hard, and to honor my late Poppa, Marlin Larr, we chose to name it Wooden Nickel Photography and Videography.” -Derrick

Don’t settle for anything less than you, don’t take any wooden nickels.
